Question by Hikari: How much does tent camping cost at campsites?
I want to go to Ft. Davis, Texas to see stars at some point in the future. But I don’t know if camping would be cheaper than getting a hotel. Or if you can see the stars are different camp sites or what.

But the point is, I’ve never gone camping. So how much do campsites generally cost?

Best answer:

Answer by Craig
This depends on where you’re staying. Rural campgrounds on BLM land can be free to a few dollars…state parks cost anywhere from $ 5 to $ 25…it’s usually less expensive to show-up and pay, especially this time of year. There’s a site online that sells state park camp site spots nationwide and they have a monopoly on state park camp lands, I’m not going to mention their name because they are a total rip-off, they can charge “surcharges” that are more than the cost of the campsite! Check-out this map of places to camp near Ft. Davis, many are hike-in but camping there can be free:

Best answer:

Answer by mopar
Well, the best way is over a camp fire. But, if you don’t have a campfire, use a cast iron skillet. Sear it well on both sides and put under a pre-heated broiler for a few min a side. Top with softened butter to melt over it while it rests before you cut into it.

Question by Rudy R: Help!!!What is a good side dish for kids on a camping trip?
I am going a Cub Scout campout this weekend and have to take tortilla chips and a side dish. The main dish is chicken fajitas. Cooking will be limited to campfire, maybe propane camp stove. 9 Kids and 9 adults.
I will be taking whatever I need to get the job done. Someone else is doing grilled vegetebles, corn, and desert.

Best answer:

Answer by Beth P
Are you taking a full compliment of pots and pans or just a basic frying pan and dutch oven or something? Canned baked beans are a simple, nutritious side dish that can easily be heated up. If you’re really adventurous, it’s easy to make homemade baked beans and they taste even better than the canned version.

But, if you want something more in keeping with fajitas, you could do re-fried beans or Spanish rice. Corn on the cob is also easy to do over a fire, if it has a grill surface over it. Soak the whole ear of corn (unshucked) in a bucket of water for a half an hour and then roast over a low fire or preferably, hot coals and turn as the husk blackens. When the husk is uniformly black all the way around, the corn is ready to peel and eat!

Also, a simple green salad and some fresh fruit wouldn’t take a few minutes to make up and dole out and don’t require any cooking.

Good luck & have fun!

Question by I Love Jesus: How does a gas water heater work? please explain:?
OK I could actually turn off my water heater and use a camp stove as I live alone, and just don’t was but one load a week, don’t go out but a couple of times a week because of my illness and am desperately trying to cut costs. So some have said if I turn it to as low as it can go (vacation?) then when I turn it on again it costs more, kind of like turniing your car engine off, it takes more gas to restart it etc. but how does a gas water heater work and why wouldn’t it be OK for me to use a camp stove for a month and see how much it saves, I’m either going to cut utility costs or have to do something drastice like ???? move, move in with someone etc. I am sick with M.E. so can’t work to make more and many other things. Hope I have explained it well enough so that you can just tell me like: If you shut if off completely in your garage, it will ???/ If you turn it to vacation and then on twice a week it will ???? Save or not or ??? thanks
AND WHY IN THE HECK DO THEY PUT WATER HEATERS OUTSIDE THE WARMED HOUSE EVEN IF THEY CONFINED IT TO AN AREA IT SEEMS SO STUPID TO PUT IT IN A COLD GARAGE UNLESS YOU OWN THE NATURAL GAS CO ????

Best answer:

Answer by plumber
leave the pilot lite on set on vacation or as low as it goes and see what happens, reason the pilot should stay on is to prevent rust or keep moisture out.

Answer by Juice Blender
I hate Tents, they’re so flimy, and a bear could easily break in and gobble everybody up.
I like Tipis, just bring a really big tarp, and either a machete, hatchet, or a big USMC Ka-Bar and hack yourself some smaller trees down, loop some cordage around the top part and spread your tipi poles out, wrap with the Tarp. Use Bungee Cords to secure an entrance.

Question by Richard: Can you grill at the Big Bear parking lot?
I have a Propane Camping Stove that i use at mountain high to make breakfast during break from snowboarding. I was wondering if anyone knows if i could do the same in the big bear parking lot with out anyone telling me to stop.

Best answer:

Answer by A Hunch
Big Bear is a city with multiple parking lots. I believe you mean Bear Mountain or Snow Summit.
This is what I would guess = no one so far has had a problem with you cooking in the parking lot of Mt High. Some day, some “joe” security guard might and there may or may not be cooking after that. And the same thing is likely to happen in Big Bear. No one may care, but then again the dude on duty might.

Question by Dr. Nasty: How safe are Natit Camp Stoves?
Our power was out due to the bad storms we have been having in NC and we needed to heat up our food. I remembered I bought an old German Natit Camp Stove at an Army/Navy Store, so we used it. The fumes coming off it were bad even with a window open.

How toxic are the fuel cubes? Are we OK from a one time exposure?
How am I supposed to read the instructions? They are written in German.

Best answer:

Answer by chris w
These are not meant to be used indoors at all. They burn fuel tablets and if you were to READ th labels you would know they produce carbon monoxide fumes which can kill you.

In addition Hexamine is prepared by the reaction of formaldehyde and ammonia. In an acid environment hexamine is converted to formaldehyde, which is toxic. Material Safety Data Sheet states combustion can create formaldehyde, ammonia, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen cyanide and ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, and kidney damage. [1] When burned, the chemical oxidation of the fuel yields noxious fumes, requiring foods being cooked to be contained in a receptacle such as a pot or pan, and burned tablets will leave a sticky dark residue on the bottom of pots. If they are stored or used under damp conditions then they can break up while burning and shed burning fragments.

So better to invest in a propane BBQ or camp stove here is an article on how to choose something way better
